Barcelona Institut de Cultura, as part of the initiatives for the European Year of Persons with Disabilities, has inaugurated an audioguide service for the visually impaired at the Museu de Ciencias Naturales.
The objective of the project is to provide access to the visually impaired and contribute to their integration in society. The ONCE Foundation (Spanish National Organisation for the Blind) has sponsored the project. Antena Audio, the provider of the audioguide service, has worked in close collaboration with ONCE and specialists in visually impaired access throughout the whole production process.
Using their own award-winning MP3 player, the X-plorerô, Antenna Audio has provided a tour with 20 minutes of information in Spanish and Catalan on the objects on display as well as explaining physical access to the exhibition space. This information is supported by specially designed panels in braille to help the visually impaired understand the layout of the building and its different spaces.
The production takes advantage of archival recordings of animal sounds belonging to the Museum to provide the proper atmosphere to the visit.
For 20 years Antenna Audio has been the leader in the field of digital audio and multimedia interpretation, providing the highest quality programming, equipment solutions and service, with the goal of creating an emotionally and intellectually engaging experience for visitors to museums, historic sites, and attractions. Over 70 million people worldwide have experienced an Antenna Audio tour at more than 800 sites, such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery, London, the Louvre, Edinburgh Castle, the Alcatraz Cellhouse, and Elvis Presley's Graceland.
