A Revolutionary Pilot of Downloads for Unmanned English Heritage Sites

Of the 400 sites that English Heritage looks after, more than 240 are un-staffed and open to the public at all reasonable times. Free Sites Unlocked is English Heritage’s project to improve the interpretation at these sites and, as part of its ongoing contract with the organization, Antenna Audio has created pilot download tours for three of these.

Netley Abbey, Maiden Castle and Baconsthorpe Castle are relatively remote, un-staffed and have little more than text panels on site. Visitors can now pre-plan a visit to these locations by downloading Antenna Audio information from English Heritage’s website for free and taking it with them on their personal mp3 players. This is part of a growing trend in self-guiding that is changing the face of tourism worldwide.

English Heritage will gather feedback on the download tours from their members to gauge whether to roll out this project across the remainder of the sites.
