Tate Education Multimedia project

Tate Modern, in partnership with Antenna Audio, is currently developing a multimedia guide to extend the opportunity for learning inside and outside the museum.

This will be a pilot project initially aimed at Key Stage 3 to 5 students visiting Tate Modern as part of a school group. Pupils will have the option to take the specially designed free multimedia guide for the permanent collection, provided on a handheld PDA . The content on the guide is specifically written to engage students with the artworks and encourage pupils to explore, evaluate and contextualise the works of modern and contemporary artists, through interactive tasks, opinion polls and questions. Pupils will also have the opportunity to record their responses and create content directly on to the PDA, using drawing, audio recording and note taking tools, selecting work they want to save to study back in the classroom / on their own. Tate staff will upload each student’s content to a personal webpage that they can access with a login and password back in the classroom. Back in class or at home, they can adapt that content, adding to it and uploading their own artwork to it, ultimately creating their own presentation from it, as part of coursework. It is envisaged that at GCSE and GCE level, students' multimedia presentations may form part of research projects or personal studies and the programme is being set up with a view to becoming part of examinable coursework.

Once the pilot has been trialled, feedback incorporated and guide content fine tuned accordingly, a website will be set up where teachers and pupils can get practical information about using the guides, possible lesson plans and learning objectives.
