Northern Nevada residents can stroll down memory lane at the National Automobile Museum, The Harrah Collection, in downtown Reno and enjoy two for one admission every Sunday through Aug. 31.
Also until Aug. 31, admission is $10 for two adults, $8 for two seniors and $4 for two children 6 to 18 years. Children age 5 and younger are free.
The two for one admission price includes a ride in a 1917 fire truck, two films and a new audio tour, where you can learn how the phrase "It's a Doozie!" got started.
One of the most historic automobiles in the world, the 1907 Thomas Flyer, is on exhibit and features the car that won the New York to Paris, "Around the World Automobile Race" 100 years ago.
Through Oct. 13, see Porsche Power. Five sports and race cars from the private collection of Ranson Webster, Porsche collector, are showcased in this masterpiece exhibit.
Kid's stuff
Sept. 20 is Kids Stuff Saturday. Hands-on experiences, including activities for boys and girls of all ages, feature the adventures of the 1908 New York to Paris Automobile Race.
Kids Stuff Saturday hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Special pricing is $1 per child ages 6 to 18 and adult and senior prices are 50 percent off regular admission prices during the event.
Smithsonian Magazine Museum Day
On Sept. 27, the museum will participate in Museum Day presented by Smithsonian magazine. Museum Day is a day when museums and cultural institutions nationwide open their doors free of charge to Smithsonian magazine readers and Smithsonian.com visitors. Anyone can visit www.smithsonian.com/museumdaycard to download and print out the Museum Day Admission Card, or cut it out of the magazine itself. Hundreds of museums nationwide participate in this event.
Continuing daily
Included with museum admission, see the film "The Bill Harrah Story," which details the man and his love for the automobile, and "The Magic Carriage," a film detailing the role the automobile has played in shaping life in America.
Both films are included with admission and are shown back-to-back every hour on the hour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
A new audio tour, also included with the price of admission, brings history to life through storytelling and sound effects. Available in both English and Spanish, the new system features light-weight, high-quality, digital audio units equipped with headphones and lanyards.
Visitors can explore history through the timeline of the automobile, including newsmaking events, cultural trends and human-interest stories about cars and artifacts in the museum's collection.
