Tower of London introduces new audio guides for blind and partially sighted visitors
The Tower of London, one of the royal palaces cared for by the charity Historic Royal Palaces, is creating the opportunity to discover the ancient site with the help of a brand new audio tour, written and produced by interpretation partners Antenna Audio, especially for blind and partially sighted visitors.
The new audio guides will let visitors explore the Tower visiting some of the key historic highlights on the way including Traitors Gate and the Bloody Tower. Visitors are given the chance to try on a replica Norman soldier’s helmet and handle chain mail as well as hear about the defence of the Tower whilst learning more about prisoners who were held in this great fortress, even discovering graffiti they left behind.
The guide lasts around 90 minutes, is free with admission and comes with a tactile map helping to reveal the hidden history of this iconic palace. With interviews from the Raven Master and the Resident Governor the tour reveals what it is really like to live inside a Royal Fortress.
The tour can be collected from the Antenna Audio distribution desk by the middle drawbridge (during the summer months) or from the onsite Beefeater gift shop inside the Tower. All the guides have headphones and a neck strap, making them easy to carry. The sound can be easily controlled and clear detailed instructions are provided on the guide to help make them easy to use.
Antenna Audio is extremely proud to launch another tour dedicated to blind and partially sighted users and is unrivalled in its expertise in this field. The company won a Jodi award in December 2009 for Best Digital Access Onsite for its audio tour for blind and partially sighted visitors at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford.
